Reduce noisiness when things go wrong in the var_view

Specifically, make sure warnings emanating from evaluating attributes,
e.g. deprecation warnings, don't interfere with the UI. Also don't fill
in the terminal view with a full traceback every time the contents
preview runs into trouble calling `str` on some object
