@mattwala This is stuff that I ran into coding with @xywei yesterday.

What do you think of these changes? I'm especially not sure about the add_and_infer_dtypes one. It is a compatible change, but it is looser in what it accepts.

What about changing the default parameter to True?

Then there'd be no behavior change, but I kind of like the feel of 'just add these types and do all the inference you can' by default.
